Sweeny: Hal Steinbrenner Delivers Yankees’ State Of The Union

Getting the Yankees State of the Union used to be a rite of spring.  George Steinbrenner used to camp out where the media could find him easily and soon a crowd gathered around as The Boss spoke about anything and everything, filling notebooks and tape recorders and creating the headlines he adored.

Hal Steinbrenner doesn’t share the same love of the spotlight, but he does understand his responsibility as Managing General Partner of the New York Yankees.  Hal was in a friendly and chatty mood when stopped by reporters outside the elevators at George M. Steinbrenner Field Thursday morning.  He spoke for less than 10 minutes, which was only a warm-up act for his father back in the day.  But in those 10 minutes, Hal shared his optimism for 2012 and his plans for beyond, namely the Yankees commitment to bring their payroll under the $189 million luxury tax threshold under the new CBA.
